How to make this film: Part two
Many people have told me they want to make films, but they don’t know how to get started. Here’s my recommendation. Film is easy to learn. The learning is the hard part. The hardest part, for many people, is finding the courage to make that first leap into unknown territory.
The first thing I would suggest is to start shooting something, just for fun. You don’t need any special equipment. You can make films with a good camera, like a smartphone, and your only costs are time and the chance that it might be funny or interesting or that someone will give you money for it. If it is a good shot, and you learn how to be a better director, you can turn it into a feature.
The best advice I ever got was given by a guy who ran a dance studio I was visiting. “You can make a film in five minutes, or you can make a whole career in five minutes.” It took me years to understand what he meant. If you make a film in five minutes, you are still learning. You are still experimenting. You are taking a few liberties. You are just starting out, and your story is still in development. You are opening yourself up to failure, but you are still making progress. It’s work, and it’s fun.
Here are my suggestions for making your first short film:
1. Pick an idea. Find something you love and that you feel passionate about. If you feel like you have nothing interesting to say, then make a video about a vacuum cleaner or a pile of laundry.
2. Make a list of things that you know how to do. Write them down, on a piece of paper, and put them in order of difficulty. Play with your ideas, starting with easy. It’ be359ba680
